The lecture on conglomeration has so far been my favorite and one I feel is one of the more relevant topics we have covered. Conglomeration is a big issue in this world. Large companies will basically eat up smaller companies and turn them into that company. What used to be a separate newspaper, news organization and magazine are now all saying the same thing and are apart of this larger organization. It takes away the competition for consumers and the diversity in news. Also, it cases a loss in jobs, which is very tough in this economy. This diagram is a good way to show all the conglomeration.
Conglomeration happens in businesses a lot. Monopolies and conglomeration go hand in hand. Recently you have started to see a large increase in businesses that have a horizontal monopoly, which is where one company owns all of one part of production. News Corporation is a great example of this. They are eating up all of the individual companies and they are pretty close to owning all of the parts of news. This is so bad because that is going to cause the news to become biased therefore braking a lot of the principles and yardsticks of Journalism. Conglomeration is a very serious issue. When larger companies eat up smaller companies it gives us less diversity and competition. It also results in a loss of jobs. If we don’t watch out all the little mom and pop companies are going to be taken over.

we used the same picture... #awkward ;)
